Doctor of Divinity
The leadership of EBS takes seriously what the Bible says in Romans 13:7, , "honour to whom honour is due." By sitting at a class and reading and studying many books, anyone including Satan, could receive his or her Ph.D. degree and also many other more degrees. But they cannot get the honorary degree (honoris causa) of Doctor of Divinity. Honouring a man after his death by a DD degree has no meaning for the concerned person. Because dead people cannot hear or appreciate anything.
Doctor of Divinity is divine by name. As the Lord leads, it will be given only on a limited basis to very few people whose contribution to the Christian Ministry with a great achievement and outstanding result.
William Carey left the school at the age of 12, yet he was responsible for overseeing the translation of all or parts of the Bible into 40 languages in India. He attended no University, yet together with Marshman and Ward, he founded Serampore College, and became its Principal. He was called the 'father of modern missions,' and today, his work is still enjoyed by millions across India. He has a life of determined vision, personal tragedy and outstanding achievement. He was highly honoured by awarding the degree of Doctor of Divinity (honoris causa) after his death. He died on June 9, 1834. Perhaps, he is the first person who received a DD degree in the history of our modern Protestant Christianity.
The leadership of EBS felt that while we are still living in flesh and actively participating in the marvellous work of the Lord in a particular field extraordinarily, we deserved to receive such a high honour during our life time. EBS Doctor of Divinity is truly a life achievement for the concerned person. But we are not selling the Academic degrees.
The faculty and board of EBS has made the first basic qualification and criteria for the standard of the degree of Doctor of Divinity sometime early in 1999, and mainly focused in the context and background of Myanmar. After several years of practice and experience, we felt a need to revise and rewrite the new guidelines according to the prevailing situation and need in order to have a better standard to accommodate more worthy people in a wider circle of the body of Christ internationally. Thus in August 2006, we have a new revised standard version for the basic qualification for the standard of the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity.
